The Way of Cain

The Way of Cain

The Bible says "woe unto them, for they have gone in the way of Cain". (Jude 1:11) But what exactly is the "way of Cain"?  Why would God warn us in His Word, The Bible, to be wary of Cain and of "the way of Cain"?  What is so wrong with Cain's way anyway?

Well, Cain was the first born son of Adam, the first man. Cain knew the truth because God had told him exactly what to do in order to please God. Cain was to offer blood, not a vegetable "good works" offering. Cain though was stubborn and "his countenance fell". Cain refused to repent and offer a blood offering as God had commanded him. Nevertheless, Cain's brother Abel did obey God and did the right thing by bringing a blood offering to God. (This blood offering by Abel looked forward in faith to the blood of Jesus.)

Abel was right in what he did in offering a blood offering. Cain was wrong to disobey God and offer a vegetable offering to God. Cain thought that he knew exactly what to do to fix this problem, and it wasn't to repent!

You can see Cain's "solution" in the above illustration. Cain "final solution" was to murder Abel. That was Cain's solution to his "problem" brother Abel who obeyed God. But you say, "what kind of solution was that?" You are so right! Cain's solution was not a real solution to the problem at all. It was the wicked, false solution of murder, a solution inspired by the father of murderers, the Devil himself.

Are you all that different from Cain? When a good Christian does the right thing by refusing to disobey God, do you then try to destroy that person? Do you have the spirit of murder in your heart towards those Fundamentalist Baptists and others who choose to put Jesus and the Bible first instead of putting a mere man or the Devil first? The Bible says that if you have hated someone in your heart, then you are a murderer in God's eyes, just like Cain was a murderer. You have gone in "the way of Cain".

Look at this idea a bit further. What if you were all alone and you thought that no one was there to watch you or see what you did? What if you thought you could kill an enemy of yours and get away with the murder? What if you thought that this was "the perfect crime", that  no one would ever catch you or punish you for this act of murder? Well, would you do it? Would you commit such a murder?

Cain thought that he could kill his brother, bury the evidence in the ground, and then pretend as if nothing had happened. Cain thought that no one would every know what he did. Cain was the original Bart Simpson who said, "I didn't do it. Nobody saw me. You can't prove a thing. Nevertheless, Cain was very much mistaken. God saw exactly what Cain did to his brother. God told Cain that "thy brother's blood cryeth unto me from the ground".

Yes, God does indeed see everything you do. If you try to harm a good Christian for putting Jesus and the Bible first, then you should know that God does indeed see it. God knows "what you did last summer" and everything else you ever did in your whole life for that matter. You might try to hide, but "the eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the Evil and the Good." God sees everything!

Where does that put you right now? Does God indeed know every one of your sins, every sin that you ever committed? Yes, God knows every single sin you ever committed. What's more, God has written down all these sins in His books up in Heaven. After you die, the Book of Revelation says that God's books will be opened and you will be judged for your sins. You will then be cast in to the Lake of Fire to burn there forever as punishment for your sins.

No, your good works will not save you. Your good works cannot erase those sins out of God's books. Your only chance is to trust Jesus, who has already paid for your sins with His own blood. If you trust Jesus, you will not have to go to Hell, but instead will go to Heaven when you die. Jesus is up in Heaven right now, waiting for you to trust Him. Trust Jesus today!
